I used recently used this pack on a 3-day remote camping trip in the Hoosier National Forest. I bought the pack because of its ability to expand in size. I thought it would be great for getting all the gear into base camp then zipping up the bottom compartment so I could still use the pack for day hiking. The pack itself has A LOT of MOLLE attachment points which I like a lot. The material seems to be quite durable. This is good, for I put my gear through a lot of abuse. The waist belt was in my opinion not well designed and /or it was neglected. There is little padding on the sides and no MOLLE attachment points. There were tiny (and I mean tiny) zippered pockets on each side of the belt that could hold only very small items. I put a shotgun shell in each one and there was no room for anything else. I removed the belt and used a standard green web belt. The quick release buckles are not quality. The first 20 minutes into the hike to camp, one of the shoulder strap buckles failed and would not stay buckled under the weight of the loaded pack. This was around 30lbs. 30lbs is NOT a heavy load for a pack and a tactical pack should be more than able to handle this. I remedied the situation by lashing 550 cord to the buckle and this prevented it from failing the rest of the trip. While lashing up the failing buckle, I (out of curiosity) tried pulling the other buckles out without depressing the catches. To my surprise, two of the buckles that hold the straps together on the sides of the pack also failed. Not a good start for the maiden voyage of this pack. After making it to camp without further issues, I unloaded the pack, collapsed and zipped up the bottom compartment, and loaded it for day hiking. I have to say that I was quite comfortable wearing the pack and had no issues. The pack with the bottom compartment zipped away has more than enough room for day hiking and I think that it would be a great hunting pack for the long treks into the stand for all day hunts. My camping buddy and I noticed that the zippers are high quality and “ride the teeth” well when zipping and unzipping the compartments. When hiking back to the truck, the other shoulder strap quick release buckle failed- at the worst time it could. I was walking up a very steep and rocky hill when it failed. The pack came off of the one shoulder swinging out, through me off balance, and I almost went tumbling back down the hill. I again used some trusty 550 cord and secured the buckle. I had no further issues with them. While walking out I did notice that the pack rode low on my back, even after I positioned the adjustable shoulder strap harness as low as it would go on the pack so I could get maximum ride height. This did pull on the shoulders a little. This pack is a great idea but has failed in some of the design areas. If the following three things would be done to this pack, in my opinion it would be a 5 star pack: 1.GET SOME QUALITY QUICK RELEASE BUCKLES ON IT!!! 2.Position the attachment point for the shoulder harness a little lower on the pack so it can ride a little higher, thus preventing some unnecessary shoulder pull. 3.Get a better waist belt with MOLLE attachments. I have used other Voodoo Tactical products and have been quite plesed with them. I was a little dissapointed with this one.
